Dundee care home celebrating after praise from care watchdog

Staff at a care home in Dundee have been praised by inspectors from the care watchdog.

Pitkerro Care Centre has been awarded an overall “good” rating by the Care Inspectorate following an unannounced inspection on Tuesday 3rd July.

The home was assessed in all categories including; quality of care and support, environment, staffing and management and leadership. Inspectors noted that previous Care Inspectorate’s requirements and recommendations, such as the management of residents’ care plans, had been met and that the home was now performing strongly against all inspection criteria.

Prior to the inspection, the Care Inspectorate sent out Care Standard Questionnaires (CSQs) to residents, relatives and staff, in order to gather information about the home and its service. One relative responded emphatically that they ‘could not ask for a better environment’ and others noted how ‘even the kitchen and gardening staff know my mum and treat her in a friendly, polite way’. Staff responded that they were confident in their ability to deliver expert care for residents, as a result of the thorough and up-to-date training and appraisal system that had been implemented in the home.

The report found that the Activities Team carefully coordinates a varied schedule to engage the residents in an enjoyable and meaningful way. Activities include planting, musical sessions and games. The report noted that the staff were also engaged in these activities which nurtured their relationships with residents and helped to promote independence amongst them.

Communication between relatives and home management was also highlighted as the reports details how they are consulted about the care of their family members in the home, the result being that they feel valued for their contribution to care. One relative commented that ‘the management and admin team know my name and always say hello.’

Chima Banda, Home Manager of Pitkerro Care Centre, said: “The positive report from the Care Inspectorate is a good achievement of which we are proud. The results are a testament to the hard work of all the staff who have worked tirelessly to ensure that our residents are truly at home in every sense of the word.”
